There’s nothing like an out-of-town houseguest to help you rediscover the wonders of your everyday surroundings.  That’s certainly been my experience during my friend Vicki’s visit.  Welcome to Nova Scotia, Vicki!

Since we’ve been busy galivanting around the province, this week’s blog post follows the abbreviated “Postcards” format I typically use while travelling.  This photo-heavy, content-light post allows me to share my experiences right away.  I’ll return to my regular blog story planning, research, writing and editing efforts shortly.
I hope you enjoy this week’s selection of Postcards from Nova Scotia.
In my previous blog post, Beacons of Light, I shared a fun fact about lighthouses in Nova Scotia ― there are about 175 around the province.  Two are quite close to my home on the Sunrise Trail.  Shown below is the lighthouse at Cape George Point.

Another noteworthy landmark in Arisaig is the St Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church.

As shown above, Nova Scotia’s autumn colors have been in their full glory.

They took on a soft, muted tone in this serene, late-evening, river view.

But the vibrancy was turned all the way up in the wild blueberry barrens.

Brilliant yellow and gold foliage provided the perfect background for Ivan Higgins’ sculptures at Cosby’s Garden Centre in Brooklyn.  See my previous blog post, Concrete Evidence in the Garden, for more information about Concrete Creations.

Beautiful scenery abounds on Nova Scotia’s South Shore.  Mahone Bay’s iconic churches are a case in point.  I like how the two cormorants in the foreground also appear to be admiring the view.

It seems this Common Merganser (Mergus merganser), also spotted in Mahone Bay, is having a great hair day!

Despite the pouring rain, we got some great snaps in Blue Rocks.

Nova Scotia’s South Shore also has some great museums.  The DesBrisay Museum in Bridgewater was hosting a unique exhibit titled Mentioning The Unmentionables.  It was an amusing display of historic undergarments.

Arguably the DesBrisay Museum’s crown jewel, the below porcupine quillwork rocking cradle was crafted by the renowned Mi’kmaw artist Christianne Morris.  I’ve been wanting to see this extraordinary work of art since writing the blog post, The Mi’kmaw Art of Porcupine Quillwork.

At the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in Lunenburg, the Zwicker & Co exhibit features a meticulously preserved 19th-century mercantile office which takes visitors back to the heyday of the Atlantic salt bank fishery.  Note the “Please do not Spit on the Floor” sign ― it fits perfectly with the unusual and amusing signs I shared in Everywhere a Sign.

I’ll wrap up with a fun Halloween-theme photo from the Fisheries Museum.
